VR for Empathy Returns to HCC: Step Into Someone Else's World
Event Details
Join HCC Central for a special VR for Empathy event on Saturday, November 15. This groundbreaking initiative was first held at HCC in 2019, followed by a larger, more impactful edition in 2020, and now returns with fresh perspectives on how immersive technology can help us understand one another more deeply.
What is VR for Empathy?
- An immersive learning initiative that uses virtual reality to foster empathy and cultural awareness
- Story-driven simulations that place you in someone else's shoes
- Explore social issues, lived experiences, and diverse perspectives firsthand
- Cultivate critical thinking and compassion through experiential learning
Why Virtual Reality for Empathy?
Virtual Reality is uniquely powerful for cultivating empathy because it allows participants to step into another person's world—to see, hear, and even feel life from perspectives different than their own. Whether it's walking in the shoes of someone facing social injustice, experiencing the challenges of accessibility, or witnessing cultural stories up close, VR offers a visceral and transformative experience that traditional media simply cannot match.
Come prepared to have a living experience as you put yourself into the shoes of others. This is not passive observation—it is active participation in someone else's reality.
What to Expect
Through powerful, story-driven simulations, participants are placed in the shoes of others to explore:
- Social Justice Issues: Experience firsthand the challenges faced by marginalized communities
- Accessibility Challenges: Understand the daily obstacles faced by people with disabilities
- Cultural Stories: Witness diverse cultural experiences and perspectives up close
- Lived Experiences: Step into worlds different from your own and build genuine understanding
About the Organizers
The Reality COLLAB, in collaboration with HCC Central Community Outreach, is proud to continue this tradition of harnessing immersive technologies for social good. Together, we invite students, faculty, and the community to discover how extended reality can inspire compassion and connection.
This event demonstrates how virtual reality can be a tool for both education and social change, creating opportunities for people to build emotional intelligence and cultural awareness in ways that were never before possible.
