About This Activity

All the chaos and confusion coming from extremists follows a well-known authoritarian playbook aimed at making people feel hopeless and defeated. Together for Democracy defies this by creating and strengthening community.

Dinners for Democracy and Coffees for Change create space for people across the country to:

  • Build community with neighbors, friends, and colleagues
  • Engage in the work to protect and advance democracy
  • Answer the question: "What can I do to make a difference?"
  • Practice self-care and mutual support
  • Build bridges with people who have different experiences

Since its founding in 2024, Together for Democracy has gathered hundreds of advocates, storytellers, scholars, policymakers, and local changemakers—all united by a single purpose: building collective power for a democracy that works for all of us.

2

Three Ways to Engage

The Resource Hub is organized into three hubs designed to meet communities where they are—whether motivated to take action, focus on self-care, or build new bridges.

Action Hub

Engage local government, participate in elections, and take concrete steps to advance democracy in your community.

💚

Support Hub

Support community resources, practice self-care, and help local organizations and institutions thrive.

🌉

Connection Hub

Connect with diverse people, learn something new, and broaden your perspective through community building.

3

Action Hub: Engage Your Community

Engage Local Government Officials:

🏛️

Attend Public Meetings

Show up to community forums. Stay informed and show policymakers that people are paying attention.

🤝

Meet Elected Officials

Meet with city council and school board members. Discuss local issues and learn about their priorities.

📋

Serve on a Commission

Apply to serve on local commissions. These positions help study issues and make policy recommendations.

💬

Thank Your Officials

Reach out to thank local leaders. Navigating the current climate as an elected official can be tough.

Participate in Local Elections:

🚶

Volunteer on Campaigns

Local campaigns have small budgets. Block walk, distribute yard signs, or host a small fundraiser.

🗳️

Become a Poll Worker

Poll workers are essential to democracy. Local jurisdictions are always in need of more.

4

Support Hub: Strengthen Your Community

📚

Use Your Local Library

Fight censorship by checking out challenged books, using library resources, or joining the library board.

📻

Support Public Radio

Become a member of your local station. In many areas, public radio is the only truly local news source.

❤️

Support Local Nonprofits

Make a contribution, volunteer your time, or buy lunch for an organization's staff one day.

🏘️

Join Your Neighborhood Association

Work with fellow residents to address issues, host events, and advocate for policies that help everyone.

Remember: Practice self-care and encourage others to do the same. Rest and joy are acts of resistance!

5

Connection Hub: Build Bridges

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the news, that's because chaos and confusion is the point. This moment requires all of us to engage—democracy is not a spectator sport. That includes creating community with people who have different experiences from you.

Partner Organizations for Learning & Connection:

Explore Democracy & Art:

  • Research the connection between democracy and art
  • Watch TED Talks on why art is important to democracy
