A Transformed World

The Charter for Compassion envisions a world where all life flourishes with compassion. Founded by scholar Karen Armstrong after receiving the TED Prize in 2008, the Charter was unveiled on November 12, 2009, with support from thousands of contributors worldwide.

The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions—the Golden Rule that calls us to treat others as we wish to be treated. The Charter translates this ancient wisdom into a living, breathing movement for our times.

Why It Matters
Access to quality education is directly tied to civic participation, economic mobility, and systemic equity. By focusing on the physical and financial infrastructure of schools, Civic Builders helps communities transform vacant buildings, underutilized lots, and scarce resources into thriving centers of learning. This work addresses structural inequities, particularly for low-income, Black, and Hispanic families disproportionately affected by lack of access to quality facilities.

The State of the City address is a critical civic moment that outlines Houston’s direction, fosters transparency, and encourages collaboration across sectors. It's an opportunity for residents and organizations to hear directly from their mayor and align around the city’s goals.
