Why Lilith Fund Exists

Abortion care is health care. But in Texas, many people cannot access the care they need.

⚠️ Current Texas Law

Under current Texas law, abortions are illegal under nearly all circumstances. However, it remains legal to travel to other states for abortion care. A person seeking an abortion is not subject to criminal penalties under Texas law.

The barriers people face:

43% of Texans struggle to afford basics
$500+ average cost of abortion care
300+ miles some must travel for care
3,700+ people contact us annually

Since the 1976 Hyde Amendment cut off federal funding for abortion care, a "dual standard" exists where reproductive rights only exist for those who can afford them. Many low-income Texans find safe, legal abortion care beyond their reach.

Who is most affected:

  • Low-income people who cannot afford care
  • People of color facing compounding barriers
  • People already parenting who need to make the best choice for their families
  • People in rural areas far from clinics
  • Young people without financial resources
  • Undocumented people afraid to seek help

How We Work

Lilith Fund takes a two-part approach to reproductive justice:

💰 Direct Support

Immediate financial help and emotional support for people seeking care

Power Building

Community organizing and movement-building to change laws and culture

🌱 Client-Centered

People who have had abortions lead and guide our work

🤝 Collaborative

Working with partners across Texas for reproductive justice

Their core values guide everything they do:

  • Intersectionality: They center low-income people of color who face compounding barriers
  • Anti-racism: They work to dismantle white supremacy and replace it with racial justice
  • Client-centered: Voices of people who have had abortions guide their work
  • Inclusivity: Using gender-inclusive language and ensuring spaces are accessible
  • Collaboration: Sharing power and resources with their communities

What makes them different:

  • Over 20 years of deep roots in Texas
  • Both direct service and systems change work
  • Led by and for people most impacted
  • Building positive culture around abortion, not just fighting restrictions
  • Creating community spaces, not just providing transactions
  • Fighting stigma through storytelling and education
